I didn’t start with a dream, I started with a wrench.
Back in the military, I worked on everything from tiny water pumps to generators the size of cars. Some of the construction equipment I maintained had tires that stood as tall as I did. That was my introduction to heavy equipment, and to responsibility. When something broke, lives and missions were on the line. There wasn’t any room for half-effort.
After the military, I found myself in school to become an automotive technician. During the day I was under the hood of semi-trucks, wrenching and learning. At night, I hit the books. I watched how some people drifted through those programs, and I watched how others (those with focus and fire) moved differently. That stuck with me.
In less than two years, I went from a dude hired to wash trucks to becoming an ASE Master Technician in both automotive and diesel. I earned my place at that shop. I didn’t wait to be told what to do. I looked for the gaps, places others avoided and I stepped into them. That mindset led me into a lead role, into Mercedes’ elite training, and eventually to Enterprise as a Master Tech.
But hear me out…
It wasn’t just hustle.
It was intention.
It was goals.
I didn’t just want to work. I wanted to grow. I had a vision of becoming someone my family could depend on. Someone who served. Someone who didn’t just show up but made an impact. And every promotion, every certificate, every new skill… started with a goal.
The Point Is…
Goals aren’t just checkboxes. They are blueprints. They guide how you spend your energy, your time, and your growth.
Without goals, you’re just working.
With goals, you’re building.
That’s where SMART goals come in. If you’re unfamiliar, here’s the breakdown:
- S – Specific: Make it clear. “Get better” isn’t a goal. “Become ASE certified” is.
- M – Measurable: Know when you’ve hit the mark. What does success look like?
- A – Achievable: Push yourself, but don’t lie to yourself.
- R – Relevant: Tie it to your bigger purpose. Make it mean something.
- T – Time-bound: A goal without a deadline is just a wish.
Start there, and your goals stop floating and start forming.
What I Learned Was…
Goals don’t just live in your head, they need the right environment to grow. I wouldn’t have made it to where I am without being around other driven people. Being in that shop, being in that school, being in those circles where people expected more of themselves… it pushed me to expect more out of me.
Association matters. Community matters. You become who you’re around.
And that’s exactly why I’m building something new. Something I wish I had back then.
Introducing: Impact Goals (Coming Soon)
Right now, I’m working on an app called Impact Goals. It’s designed to help people set powerful, clear goals and actually track them.
But it’s not just about setting goals.
The app will feature:
- AI integration to give you personalized tips and strategies to keep you moving.
- Community connection, where you can share your progress, get inspired, and stay motivated alongside others working toward impact.
- Progress tracking so your growth isn’t just felt, it’s seen.
Because goals are more than tasks, they’re tied to your calling. And when your heart is in the right place, and your goals align with that, God can move through it in powerful ways.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” – Proverbs 16:3
Whether you’re under a hood or leading a family… don’t just move.
Set your target. Lock in. Go make impact.
